History of the Tarot
There has been some dispute as to when the Tarot actually came into existence. Some scholars and historians believe it started (or at least was influenced) with the ancient Egyptians. They believe the images in the Pyramids hold some of the mysteries of the Tarot, and that some of those images are depicted on the cards themselves. It is also believed early Tarot cards were used as secret code, or simply for fortune-telling. History points to the first actual deck of Tarot cards coming into existence around the 14th century. It was believed to have started with just the 22 Major Arcan cards, and the other suit cards were added as time went on. The cards were originally thought to have been brought over from Italy to Spain in the late 14th century, but there is no evidence yet to support that. Nonetheless the Tarot has become a mainstay in occult practices and used by many cultures since then. Thanks to people like Edward Arthur Waite, who created probably the most widely used Tarot deck, it became a popular tool for fortune-tellers in the 20th century.
While the Tarot is popular and many fortune-tellers of today use it, no one can ever truly master the art of the reading. So much still lies hidden in the cards, the pictures, and in our own subconsciousness that it would take many lifetimes to accomplish.
